Just this month, a 25-year-old Texas law student named Cody Wilson made history. Using a Stratasys (NASDAQ: SSYS  ) SST 3-D printer, Wilson created a fully functional firearm with 15 different plastic parts that were hand assembled. The only non-plastic part was the metal firing pin.

Wilson, who founded a non-profit group named Defense Distributed, invited Forbes magazine reporter Andy Greenberg to a shooting range outside of Austin to see the first demonstration of the gun's capacity. Nicknamed the "Liberator", the gun was able to fire a .380 handgun round without damaging the gun itself.

Wilson later put the CAD file for the Liberator up online, and in two days, over 100,000 copiesof the file were downloaded for free.

Garnering the interest of lawmakers
No sooner, however, had the CAD files been made available than the U.S. government stepped in to eliminate them from the Internet.

The first "insider" stock to buy is Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), one of the leading internet security providers in the world.

Symantec makes a wide range of products that help individuals and businesses keep their computers and mobile devices safe from viruses and malware. The stock recently dropped sharply after the company fell short of analysts' quarterly earnings expectations, but CEO Stephen Bennett clearly disagrees with the market's opinion of the company's prospects. He got out his checkbook and added 1,000,000 shares of stock for a total cost of more than $2.2 million. He now owns 488,000 shares of Symantec stock and clearly has high expectations for the future of Symantec's stock price.

Peter Parks, AFP/Getty ImagesThe 12-story building in Shanghai's northern suburb of Gaoqiao where a Chinese military-led hacking group allegedly conducted a series of attacks on U.S. companies networks. BOSTON -- Cybersecurity company FireEye has acquired Mandiant, the computer forensics specialist best known for unveiling a secretive Chinese military unit believed to be behind a series of hacking attacks on U.S. companies. FirEye (FEYE) shares jumped more than 20 percent after Thursday's announcement of the $1.05 billion cash-and-stock deal, which FireEye said closed Monday. It unites two companies with relatively new technologies for thwarting cyber attacks, and brings together two of the most-respected executives in the security industry: FireEye CEO Dave DeWalt and Mandiant founder Kevin Mandia. While sales of older anti-virus products have been on the decline, security experts expect strong growth in both FireEye's cloud-based systems for detecting malicious software and Mandiant's software that analyzes cyber attacks. About a year ago the two companies entered into a technology development agreement that made it easier to deploy their products together. With the merger, FireEye will gain Mandiant's team of forensics investigators. "They have these very strong Navy 'cyber' Seals who respond to breaches and are very good at what they do," DeWalt said about Mandiant. He had previously served as chairman of Mandiant's board. "My aim is to create the strongest security company in the world," DeWalt said in an interview. FireEye, which has yet to post a profit, said the acquisition will be immediately accretive to earnings and expects the combined company's revenue to grow about 50 percent this year. In comparison, Symantec (SYMC), the biggest maker of anti-virus software, has said it expects fiscal 2014 revenue to drop 3 percent to 4 percent. Mandiant is best known for its forensics services. The company rose to prominence in February 2013 when it pu

Additionally, I will evaluate which institutional investors bought the stock in the recent quarters (institutional backup can tell a lot about a stock), and the initiatives that the company is putting in motion in order to ameliorate its sales and margins.

    Earnings

The first step is analyzing Symantec Corp earnings growth. I am looking for companies that are able to expand both their quarterly and annual earnings by more than 15% a year. Last quarter the company generated 13% quarterly EPS growth when compared to the same quarter last year. Thus, I am not encouraged by SYMC numbers. Past growth winners (Apple, Baidu, etc.) generated consistent quarterly EPS growth above 15% and I am certainly looking for that level before investing.

In addition, SYMC generated three-year average annual EPS growth of 10%. This is an important metric to follow in growth stocks because it highlights how well the stock grew in the past years. I like to invest in companies that are growing consistently.

    Revenue

Let's take a look at SYMC麓s revenue growth. This is a key metric that needs to be analyzed before investing in a company, as it is one of the scarce figures that cannot be modified through accounting tricks and similar dodges.

The company reported a 5% quarterly revenue drop year over year. On the contrary, I look for companies that generate more than 15% in quarterly growth.

When betting on a company, an investor wants to see sales grow or improve over time nd not just in the last reported quarter. Looking at the company financials in comparison to previous years will give participants a much better idea of how well a company is doing. Symantec Corp generated a three-year average annual sales growth rate of 4%.

For some reason, certain companies can attract buyers no matter the circumstance. I would put Symantec (SYMC) in that category. Shares have gained nearly 20% this year even as Symantec prospects deteriorated.

Ebay is an established company that has made a name for itself pioneering internet commerce. Carl Icahnis pushing eBay to spin off PayPal into its own company. The stock has moved higher in recent years, but is currently trading sideways. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been rising. However, investors have had conflicting feelings about recent earnings announcements. Relative to its peers and sector, eBay has been a relative year-to-date performance leader. Look for Ebay to OUTPERFORM.

That could actually be true. Started as a business-to-business e-commerce site, Alibaba has expanded to include Tmall (where companies sell to consumers) and Taobao (where consumers sell to other consumers). According to Morgan Stanley, the gross value of goods that moved through Alibaba exceeded the combined value of goods that moved through Amazon.com (AMZN) and eBay (EBAY) in 2012.

www.ebay.com There were plenty of winners and losers in the business world this week, with the leading online auction site suffering a massive data breach and a streaming video service expanding overseas. Here's a rundown of the smartest moves and biggest blunders. eBay (EBAY) -- Loser A massive data breach at eBay was reported this week. Hackers cracked into eBay's database, gaining access to the names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses and birthdays of its 233 million registered users. Passwords and payment information were encrypted, and are in all likelihood safe, but eBay is telling folks as they log into the site to change their passwords as a precautionary measure. Identity theft at websites and retailers is a major problem, but why are companies so slow to get the news out? The hack at eBay took place nearly three months ago, and eBay found out about it two weeks ago. Why did it wait until Wednesday to announce the breach? It also didn't mail its users, choosing instead to let them know about it when they logged into the site. Such situations are unfortunate, and unfortunately becoming more common, but companies need to own up to the breaches sooner and communicate with their customers more effectively when they happen. Netflix (NFLX) -- Winner The leading premium video streaming service is about to collect some more passport stamps. Netflix announced on Wednesday that it will be expanding into Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Luxembourg later this year. The moves were widely expected. Variety spilled the beans on Netflix being in talks to enter France and Germany several weeks ago. After offering its digital platform in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, the central Europe is a logical next step. Sears Holdings (SHLD) -- Loser Several out-of-favor retailers bounced back a bit this earnings season, but Sears wasn't one of them. The parent company of Kmart and its namesake department store saw sales fall 7 percent in it

I’m Marc Bastow, a Yahoo (YHOO) shareholder as of January.
