There were also a few of Viacom's MTV and Comedy Central shows that went away, but the real hit to Netflix came from the departure of the popular Nick programming for kids. Well, come next month adults will get a taste, as Downton Abbey goes away. Netflix's streaming rights end on July 1. In a shrewd coincidence, Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) has picked up streaming rights for both Viacom's content and the popular BBC series.

Advisors' Opinion:

InterActiveCorp (IACI) bought Ask.com for $1.85 billion in 2005. The new Perion will be worth only about 40% of that. After the merger, Perion will leapfrog its much larger rivals: Babylon and AVG (AVG). Finally, Perion should be able to increase its operating margins as it can spread its SG&A costs over a much larger base (Conduit EBITDA margin is 32% vs. Perion's 23%). Perion will keep its senior management team intact: Josef Mandelbaum will remain its CEO and Yacov Kaufman its CFO. Perion has successfully orchestrated a roll-up acquisitions of privately-held Sweetpacks and Smilebox, so I have high confidence that they know how to integrate a new business.

Both Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) Safari and Mozilla's Firefox browsers earn search royalties from Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) . Google pays the companies to use its service as the primary search engine in their browsers -- and in some cases pays them quite well. It's estimated that Google made $1.3 billion from iOS searches last year, and paid $1 billion to Apple to remain the company's default mobile search engine for iOS. Though its not clear whether this is through a revenue-sharing model or direct payouts, a Morgan Stanley analyst believes Google pays Apple about $3.20 per iOS device.

It is too early to say who will become the dominant player in the Internet of things. Apple, Google (GOOG) and Samsung (SSNLF) were the obvious winners of the mobile computing revolution of the past decade, just as Microsoft (MSFT), Cisco (CSCO) and Intel were the winners of the PC and early Internet age. Yet each of these big technology companies suffers from the same problems today: All of their products — yes, even smartphones — are mature, and their markets are quickly getting saturated.

People are excited about Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) Fiber. The search giant's foray into gigabit fiber optic broadband service represents an important catalyst for the industry, while also embodying a potentially disruptive threat to incumbent cable companies that are intent on holding America captive through high prices and slow speeds.

Microsoft and Nokia are up against the same barriers that have halted the advance of HTC, Motorola, Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) and LG, the largest competitors to Samsung and Apple. Each loses large sums of money attacking the market. Another group of companies that include PC giant Lenovo also try to grab share. Apple and Samsung have portions of many markets that are well above two-thirds. In the United States, according to research firm comScore,Apple and Samsung had nearly 64% of the market in June. Those figures for both firms are rising. Additionally, Samsung products run Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android OS, which comScore shows with a 52% market share among operating systems used in smartphones sold in America.
