Shares of MannKind (NASDAQ: MNKD ) have nearly tripled over the last year. The value of the biotech is up a whopping 584% when you look at the company's market cap because of all the additional shares it's sold.
MannKinddata by YCharts.
What's caused this increase?
Increased revenue? Nope, MannKind doesn't have any products for sale.
Clinical trial data? Not really. The company completed enrollment for two phase 3 trials testing its inhaled insulin Afrezza in October, but the trials aren't expected to read out until this summer.
Big licensing deal? No, MannKind has been talking about one for years, but nothing has materialized yet.
Instead, it looks like the price increase is simply because investors are more interested in owning MannKind than they were a year ago. More buyers and fewer sellers means the price has to go up. Valuation be damned.

www.youtube.com From a greeting card giant's savvy viral video catching fire to a key Best Buy executive calling it quits, here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) -- Winner Johnson & Johnson's signature Band-Aids and its "No More Tears" baby shampoo won't be necessary after the consumer and pharmaceuticals giant posted better than expected quarterly results. Adjusted earnings climbed to $1.54 a share from a $1.22 a share showing a year earlier. Analysts were holding out for a profit of $1.48 a share. Revenue also clocked in better than expected, topping $18 billion. A good report sometimes isn't enough to please the market, but Johnson & Johnson kept the positive vibes coming by raising its forecast for all of 2014. US Airways -- Loser It's probably the nightmare of anyone working social media for a major corporation. You're surfing the Web between posting corporate tweets, you come across something shockingly naughty, and you want to share it with a friend so you copy the link. Unfortunately you forget to update your copied link when publicly responding to a client on Twitter, only to realize that you're sending a link of a naked woman getting intimate with a model airplane to more than 420,000 followers. This is what happened to American Airlines Group's (AAL) US Airways on Monday. It quickly deleted the tweet, but not before word spread of the deed. Accidents happen. Even folks on top of the social media universe are human. It's still embarrassing. Netflix (NFLX) -- Winner Comcast (CMCSK) customers should experience better Netflix connections. We figured this would happen back in February when Netflix struck a deal with the country's largest cable and broadband Internet provider to improve video quality, but now it's official. cinz/Flickr Apple (AAPL) is in talks with Comcast to enter into a deal for a streaming-television service that would allow Apple set-top boxes to bypass congestion on the Web, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The discussions are in early stages and there are a lot of hurdles to be crossed before a definitive agreement could be reached, the Journal said. Apple, which wants its TV service's traffic to be separated from public internet traffic over the "last mile" for faster transmission, is looking for special treatment from Comcast's (CMCSA) (CMCSK) cables to bypass congestion, the report said. Comcast and Apple declined to comment on the report. Apple has been in talks for a faster TV set-top box with Time Warner Cable (TWC), which recently agreed to be bought by Comcast. Apple's $99 TV box competes with similar streaming devices from Roku and Google (GOOG). Netflix agreed last month to pay Comcast for faster speeds, throwing open the possibility that more content companies will have to shell out for better service.

Getty Images Depending on your personal investing philosophy, risk profile, strategy, and a host of external factors, there's a long list of traits you could put on your checklist for what makes a stock right for your portfolio. And then there are the exceptions -- companies that, for good reason, fall outside of the parameters you've set, but that you can't help thinking are a "good investment" But picking a good investment doesn't always have to be so complex. You can use simpler screen -- a checklist of just a few traits that are universally good markers of an appealing long-term holding. Here are three key traits that will key you in to a good investment, regardless of the company's sector, whether it's considered a growth or value stock, or even whether it's a market favorite or a pariah. 1. A brand that's synonymous with the product Technology companies largely rely on human capital for their ongoing competitiveness. Needless to say, people are highly unpredictable assets that can, and do, change quickly. So, products with an Apple logo will only stay popular so long as the mechanics and technology created by its people are cutting-edge. In other words, it's the talent that made Apple (AAPL) what it is today. And in order to remain great, Apple needs to retain its best people and be better than its competitors in acquiring the top minds in its industry. That's why, despite the company's incredible growth and ability to shape the future of multiple industries, Apple will never be as sound an investment as, say, Coca-Cola (KO). Sure, Coca-Cola has an amazing manufacturing and distribution system, along with a super-secret formula to make its signature soft drink. But its true beauty as a company, a brand, and an investment, is that it has taken the simplest of ingredients and through brilliant branding turned its core product into one of the biggest, most recognizable brand names in the world (actually, the third biggest, according to Interbrand's 2013

We're seeing the same exact price setup in shares of mid-cap insurance broker Arthur J. Gallagher (AJG) -- just in the shorter-term. AJG has been forming an ascending triangle setup of its own since the beginning of May, hitting its head on resistance at $45.50. That's the breakout level to watch in shares this week.
Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Ascending triangles and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.
That resistance line at $45.50 is a price where there's an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes the move above it so significant -- a breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you jump into this stock.
