The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) is a gold mine for long-term investors. It's particularly juicy if you're looking for high-quality income stocks, as these proven blue chips tend to deliver both high yields and reliable dividend growth. But there are stragglers in every herd, including this elite collection. Let me point out the three worst dividend stocks on the Dow today.
AA Dividend data by YCharts.
Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) is a horrible income stock right now, any way you slice it. No other Dow stock even comes close to its feeble 0.3% yield. Annual payouts have plunged 97% over the last decade, and regulators keep a heavy foot on B of A's throat to prevent the troubled bank from over-stretching its financial reserves. That financial crisis in 2008 wrought devastation on Bank of America's dividend appeal.

As we have pointed out multiple times in the last several weeks, large cap Energy stocks led by Exxon (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) have been big laggards over the last year. As you slide down the market cap scale, however, relative strength has been improving. Small cap Energy sector stocks, for example, have been on a tear, and are outperforming the S&P 600 small cap index by the largest margin of the year.

A few months ago, when the Associated Press twitter account was hacked and a false message about a fire at the White House appeared, the market quickly tanked only to get right back once it was rebuffed. That is certainly one (illegal) way to use Twitter for financial gain. This week, we saw a much more legitimate way to use Twitter. Carl Icahn (@Carl_C_Icahn), one of the most powerful investors in the world announced he had a big stake in Apple (AAPL) with over $1.5B in stock. The stock shot up instantly.

One concern, though, is how the company handled news of Venezuela's currency devaluation. Clorox (NYSE: CLX ) and Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL ) also felt the pinch, with Clorox taking about a $0.05 to $0.10 per-share earnings hit and Colgate losing about $0.50 per share. But they also addressed the potential devaluation more proactively than P&G did. Clorox actuallyanticipatedthe devaluation in its February earnings report, projecting the potential hit if a devaluation took place. Colgate didn't provide specific guidance in advance but clearly saw it as an issue, delivering on a promise to give prompt guidance revisions after the devaluation occurred.

Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG ) will release its quarterly report on Friday, and investors have watched the stock hit new all-time record highs in November before falling back in the past two months. Despite the optimism, Procter & Gamble earnings face pressure from international giant Unilever (NYSE: UL ) as well as domestic rivals Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL ) and Kimberly-Clark (NYSE: KMB ) . The question facing investors is whether P&G can sustain its longtime competitive advantages against its rivals and bolster its growth.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Teresa Rivas]
Both Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) were rising on Monday, thanks in part to upgrades from Robert W. Baird.
Analysts David Koning and Adam Dahms boosted their opinions on both stocks to Outperform. They have a $245 price target on Visa, and note that the risk/reward has become more attractive, in our view, as the stock enjoys strong secular tailwinds in its business model, solid free cash flow generation, and what they see as exaggerated concerns about regulatory and competitive issues. They call the stock recent pullback as an attractive entry point, given the stock ompelling valuation./p>
Read more detailed estimates below:
Strong business model/solid balance sheet:
We think EPS growth in the mid-teens is sustainable over time behind roughly 10%+ revenue growth (the international segment is now about 50% of revenue and can grow rapidly).
The strong balance sheet/FCF typically in excess of earnings allows for strong buyback activity (could comfortably add 5%/year to EPS) or could allow for the accretive purchase of Visa Europe.
Recent fears about the stock might be a bit overblown:
Regulatory: Risk of potential share loss due to changes in the exclusivity rules did not materialize. The US Appeals Court decided to keep existing rules intact.
MCX: Although some share loss is certainly possible, we do not see overly material displacement of V/MA as a realistic outcome.
Russia: Full displacement is unlikely so long as consumers continue to use V/MA (acceptance largely consumer driven). Russia is likely <1% of revenue, not very impactful regardless of displacement.
CQ1 weakness: Credit card data from JPM/WFC last week showed CQ1 volumes largely steady (relative to CQ4). We considered some deceleration likely this quarter.
Valuation appears compelling at these levels:
The stock has underperformed the S&P by ~10% YTD (currently trades at +33% premium to NTM S&P, low
