5 Stocks to Sell at All-Time Highs

Knowing which of stocks to sell — and when to sell them — is just as important as knowing how to find bargains. After all, the idea is to buy low and sell high. True, no one can time the market or a stock perfectly, but you’re more likely to reap maximum gains if you don’t get greedy.

trading screen iStock 000007388795XSmall e1289947313436 5 Stocks to Sell at All Time HighsThe S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average hit all-time highs this week, and a number of big-name stocks did, too. Although there’s nothing better than record-high prices, often it’s a signal to sell — especially when the stock in question has no business hitting all-time highs.

Too often, stocks hitting all-time highs come down hard off those peaks as investors take the opportunity to lock in profits, valuations become stretched or the outlook doesn’t warrant further gains. That’s when it’s time to get out. (Just look at Thursday’s drops in the S&P and the Dow as proof.)

As fun as it’s been watching these names make record highs this week, it’s hard to see any of them building on the trend. That makes these 5 stocks hitting all-time highs ones that you should sell while they’re still hot:

Stocks to Sell: Dillards (DDS)

dillards 185 5 Stocks to Sell at All Time HighsDillard’s (DDS) department store is hitting new all-time highs above $106 this week, which means profit-taking probably isn’t far away. True, half-a-decade ago, DDS was the JCPenney (JCP) of its day, and no one gave it a chance. But as unlikely as it seemed at the time, DDS managed to pull off a very successful turnaround.

Too bad there are no such catalysts for DDS stock going forward. Indeed, DDS missed Wall Street’s earnings estimates by a wide margin last quarter in the all-important holiday selling season. Current quarter earnings are forecast to be flat. Analysts estimates are coming down at faster rate than they are for the retail sector. And gross margin expansion seems to have run its course.

Take the money and run.

Stocks to Sell: DirectTV (DTV)

directTV 5 Stocks to Sell at All Time HighsDirectTV (DTV) rocketed to a record high of $89.46 because of media reports that telecom giant AT&T (T) wants to buy the satellite-TV company for perhaps $50 billion. Yes, that would represent a 16% premium to the current share price even after rallying on the deal news … but why get greedy?

DTV stock is up 22% on the promise of a takeover by AT&T. It’s up 13% in just the last month. But that could all come crashing down. AT&T’s bid is by no means a slam dunk. The telco hasn’t even made a formal offer yet, and it’s unclear if regulators would bless any merger anyway. That leaves too much risk to the downside, so sell why the selling is good.

Stocks to Sell: Hormel (HRL)

hrl 5 Stocks to Sell at All Time HighsHormel (HRL) is having a good year despite turbulent times for food companies. HRL stock notched an all-time of $49.52 earlier this week and is having a solid 2014. Indeed, HRL is up almost 8% this year.

Unfortunately, the record-high price for HRL stock also makes it look unsustainably expensive. For one thing, input costs are going up. Energy prices are rising, while drought and disease are making beef and pork more expensive. Yet HRL trades at a 25% premium to its own five-year average on a forward earnings basis, according to data from Thomson Reuters Stock Reports.

Moreover, HRL already topped Wall Street’s price target, making downgrades on valuation a real risk. If you’ve got gains in HRL, you might as well lock them in.

Stocks to Sell: McDonald’s (MCD)

mcdonalds 5 Stocks to Sell at All Time HighsStrange as it may seem, McDonald’s (MCD) stock hit a record high very recently even as the fast-food chain struggles with ongoing sales weakness in the U.S. MCD stock touched $103.78 this week as part of its 6% gain for the year.

However, like HRL, MCD stock is now vulnerable on valuation. MCD stocks trades at more than 10% premiums to its five-year average by both forward and trailing earnings, according to Thomson Reuters Stock Reports. Besides, a forward P/E of more than 16 is hard to justify with a long-term growth rate of less than 8%.

The U.S. accounts for about a third of MCD revenue. When the market starts growing again MCD might deserve a premium valuation. Until then, MCD stays on our list of stocks to sell.

Stocks to Sell: Kroger (KR)

KrogerLogo 5 Stocks to Sell at All Time HighsKroger (KR) is doing well for the nation’s largest supermarket operator. KR stock is up more than 18% so far this year, and it notched a new all-time high of $46.93 earlier this week. KR is managing to grind out solidly higher growth, thanks in part to acquisitions and natural and organic products.

Once again, that leaves KR stock vulnerable on valuation, with shares fetching a 24% premium to their own five-year average by forward earnings, according to Thomson Reuters Stock Reports. At the same time, operationally, everyone is gunning for KR. Private equity firm Cerberus is buying Safeway (SWY) and already owns Albertsons. That’s a formidable rival. And Whole Foods (WFM) is rethinking prices after a poor quarterly showing.

KR might have a bit more upside in it, but at this point it’s safer to book any gains.

As of this writing, Dan Burrows did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

Small cap green stocks Building Turbines Inc (OTCMKTS: BLDW), Virtual Sourcing, Inc (OTCMKTS: PGCX) and Unseen Solar, Inc (OTCMKTS: PCWT) have been getting some attention lately in various investment newsletters in part because some green is being paid out in the form of paid promotions or investor relation activity. Of course, there is nothing wrong with properly disclosed paid promotions, but you do need to remember that small cap stocks (especially those in new green industries) already come with risk. With that in mind, here is a quick reality check about these three green small cap stocks and whether you can expect to see some green in the form of profits:

    Multimedia Games (MGAM)

With the stock down more than 13% since early March, it would be easy to assume Multimedia Games Holding Company (MGAM) was headed for a nasty earnings report at the end of April. The market was wrong, however. MGAM posted a 25% increase in revenue for the quarter, and a 28% improvement in earnings … and that was before the acquisition of PokerTek (PTEK). Bringing PokertTek into the fold will almost assure a fourth straight year of revenue and income growth.

House Approves Debt-Ceiling Hike Without Conditions

Bedrock GOP principle dropped in debt ceiling votePete Marovich/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesHouse Speaker John Boehner of Ohio. WASHINGTON -- It was once the backbone of the House Republican majority -- the hard-line stand that brought President Barack Obama to the negotiating table and yielded more than $2 trillion in deficit reduction. On Tuesday, it abruptly vanished, the victim of Republican disunity and a president determined not to bargain again. During the summer budget negotiations in 2011, House Speaker John Boehner had insisted that any increase in the nation's borrowing limit be matched dollar for dollar with spending cuts. It became the "Boehner Rule," a mantra of fiscal discipline. And while it didn't always live up to its tit-for-tat formula, it helped drive budget talks and kept deficit reduction at the fore of the Republican agenda. But there are limits to Republican power, and on Tuesday inevitability finally caught up to the speaker. Boehner let Congress vote on a measure to extend the nation's borrowing authority for 13 months without any spending conditions -- a "clean bill" that was an unequivocal victory for Obama. It passed 221-201, with only 28 Republican votes. The Senate still has to approve the extension, but that's considered a mere formality in the Democratic-controlled chamber. Boehner's retreat hardly came as a surprise. Conservative lawmakers had failed to back a couple of proposed attachments aimed at Obama and his fellow Democrats. One would have approved the Keystone XL oil pipeline and the other would have repealed a provision of the health care law. Either of those faced unified Democratic opposition, so Boehner would have needed 218 Republican votes to pass it in the House. But conservatives were either determined to vote against the debt ceiling increase, no matter what, or found the provisions too small a price for their vote. "When you don't have 218 votes, you have nothing," Boehner said. Starting last year, Obama has steadfastly refused to negotiate over giving the Treasury Department the authority to borrow the money it needs to pay bills like Social Security benefits, payments on government debt and checks for federal workers. For Boehner, however, not all was lost. He placed the burden of extending Treasury's borrowing authority -- not a politically popular vote -- on the Democrats, and most members of his party got to vote no. What's more, the decision helped remove a potentially damaging diversion. Republican allies in the business community have long pleaded with Republicans not to play brinkmanship with the nation's credit. Last year's threat of default, followed by a partial government shutdown over stalled budget talks, harmed Republicans in the eyes of the public. Instead, Boehner and his leadership team have decided to keep the political focus on Obama's health care law, which they have targeted as the Achilles' heel for Democrats in this election year. It was the second time in two weeks that Boehner swept away an issue that threatened to overshadow the GOP attention on health care. He had outlined principles on how to achieve an overhaul of immigration law. But faced with a conservative outcry, Boehner last week deep-sixed the issue, declaring that immigration legislation this year was a long shot. "Boehner's thinking here is we have to pick the smarter fight," said Kevin Madden, a Republican strategist and former senior congressional leadership aide. "The smarter fight is Obamacare. If we get dragged into a protracted fight over the debt limit, like the one we saw over the government shutdown, it provides a distraction over the bigger issues the party can litigate." Conservative, tea party-aligned groups immediately objected to Boehner's decision, calling it a capitulation and demanding that Republicans vote against the debt ceiling increase. "When we heard that House leadership was scheduling a clean debt ceiling increase, we thought it was a joke," Andy Roth of the conservative Club for Growth wrote in an email to congressional offices. "Something is very wrong with House leadership, or with the Republican Party." But among lawmakers, the reaction was muted. When Boehner announced his decision in a private meeting with Republicans, one participant described the reaction as resigned silence. And during scheduled debate on the House floor, Rep. Dave Camp, the chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, was the only Republican to speak, reluctantly giving his support for allowing Treasury to borrow more money. "While I believe that we must increase our debt limit, I'm clearly not satisfied that there are no provisions that would help us address the long-term drivers of this debt," he said, before becoming one of the 28 Republicans who voted for the measure. This all could change if Republicans win control of the Senate in November. Republicans would then control Congress and Obama might have little recourse but to accept some Republican demands. A Republican victory in the fall, Madden said, would mean "the most recent electoral mandate would be favorable to the Republican bargaining position."

Liberty Media bids for full ownership of Sirius

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Liberty Media is trying to devour all of Sirius XM in a deal that would value the satellite radio service at nearly $23 billion.

The complex proposal announced Friday would enable Liberty Media to seize full ownership of Sirius XM Holdings after it acquired a controlling interest in the company last year.

Liberty Media, an Englewood, Colo., company controlled by billionaire John Malone, owns about 53% of Sirius XM's stock, according to a letter filed Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Under the proposal, each Sirius share would be exchanged for 0.076 shares of Liberty Media's Series C Common stock if the bid is accepted.

Sirius XM stockholders would end up with a 39% stake in Liberty Media, whose portfolio already includes ownership of the Atlanta Braves baseball team, and stakes in cable TV and Internet service provider Charter Communications, concert promoter Live Nation Entertainment and book retailer Barnes & Noble

The stock swap translates into $3.68 for each Sirius XM share, based on Friday's closing price of Liberty Media's stock. The bid is just 3% above Sirius XM's Friday closing price of $3.57 per share. The stock jumped 5% to $3.75 in extended trading after the proposal was unveiled.

The offer values Sirius XM at just under $23 billion, based on company's 6.1 billion outstanding shares as of Oct. 22. Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei told analysts in a conference call that the deal ultimately will peg Sirius XM's value at $27 billion because of additional shares expected to be issued under the proposal.

Maffei said Liberty Media will abandon the deal if it doesn't win the backing of Sirius XM's board. Sirius XM said it is forming a special committee of independent directors to consider the offer.

New York-based Sirius XM has built the world's largest pay-radio service with 25.6 million subscribers. Despite its popularity, Sirius XM has faced numerous challenges through the years, including stiffer compet! ition from digital radio alternatives offered by Pandora Media Inc. and Apple Inc.

Liberty Media saved Sirius XM from near bankruptcy in 2009 with a $530 million loan.

Svanblar/Shutterstock A common antimicrobial agent called triclosan causes liver fibrosis and cancer in laboratory mice through mechanisms also relevant to humans, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have found Triclosan's broad use in consumer goods -- including liquid hand soaps, toothpastes, shampoos, cosmetics, plastics, yoga mats, cutting boards and ice cream scoops -- presents "a very real risk of liver toxicity for people, as it does in mice," said Robert H. Tukey, a UC-San Diego professor and co-author of the study, published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Triclosan, a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibacterial chemical, is coming under fire because of its links to endocrine disruption that could cause infertility, impaired muscle function and now increased cancer risks. It's All Around The UC-San Diego study showed that mice exposed to triclosan for six months (roughly equivalent to 18 human years) had more and larger chemical-induced liver tumors than mice not exposed to the antimicrobial. Researchers believe triclosan may interfere with the protein responsible for detoxifying foreign! chemical! s in the body, thereby causing liver cells to proliferate and, over time, become cancerous tumors. Studies have found traces of triclosan in 97 percent of breast milk samples from lactating women and in the urine of nearly 75 percent of people tested, according to a statement by UC San Diego Health System. Triclosan is also one of the seven most frequently detected compounds in streams across the United States, the statement says. "We could reduce most human and environmental exposures by eliminating uses of triclosan that are high-volume, but of low-benefit, such as inclusion in liquid hand soaps," said Bruce D. Hammock, professor at University of California, Davis. "Yet we could also for now retain uses shown to have health value -- as in toothpaste, where the amount used is small." Colgate-P

In a previous article, I outlined that it is getting more difficult to find quality dividend paying stocks to buy. Most of the usual suspects like Kimberly-Clark (KMB) or Colgate-Palmolive (CL) are very overvalued today, which prevents me from adding to my positions there. Other companies like Chevron (CVX) are attractively valued today, but unfortunately my portfolio is overweight in them. Currently I find the oil sector to be cheap and have some of the lowest P/E ratios in the market. However, I would hate to be concentrated in one sector which is exposed to the fluctuating prices in its commodity products.

Moreover, it's starting to appear that Clorox has weathered a tough part of its business cycle. Throughout the industry, Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) , Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL  ) , and Clorox all had to deal with rising costs for the inputs they needed to make their respective products. The companies responded by implementing price-cutting measures and passing on part of their higher costs to their customers. For its part, Clorox was able to expand its gross margins by a full perc! entage po! int, with a worse-than-normal flu season contributing to sales. Now that input-cost inflation is easing, P&G and Clorox expect to see better profitability, with growth starting to approach the faster rates that Colgate has enjoyed.

Best Income Stocks To Watch For 2015

LONDON -- With interest rates being at historic lows, stocks such asGlaxoSmithKline (LSE: GSK  ) (NYSE: GSK  ) have offered a remedy for income-seeking investors.

Indeed, the shares currently yield an impressive 4.4% despite rising by more than 30% in the last three years alone. Clearly, it is understandable why the shares usually form a key part of many investors' portfolios.

However, pigeonholing Glaxo as being little more than a source of income is, in my view, a tad unfair.

Of course, we all know the familiar story that the developed world has an ageing population, which will require treatments and health care in future on a larger scale than it currently does. This situation undoubtedly presents an opportunity for health care companies such as Glaxo.

However, the potential for share-price gains also exists over a much shorter investment horizon.

Unlike stable mateAstraZeneca, Glaxo has successfully managed its portfolio of patented blockbuster products. Indeed, it seems to have avoided a so-called patent cliff -- where old patents expire, there are no new products to replace them, and revenue then declines significantly.

Early Stages Of Eurozone Banking Union To Be Difficult

Top 5 Defensive Companies To Own For 2016

The euro was strong on Tuesday morning as investors continued to shy away from the dollar. The common currency traded at $1.3777 at 5:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The region is slowly crawling out of its longest post war recession; however it has a long road ahead with many countries pinned under a mountain of debt. Now that the immediate crisis is over, the European Central Bank has set its sights on pushing forward the banking union which has been touted as one of the most momentous decisions the bloc has made since its creation.

Related: #PreMarket Primer: Tuesday, October 29: Fed Meeting Likely Uneventful

Unfortunately, the bank is likely to face several problems putting plans into action, including convincing all of the eurozone's members to get on board. Germany has been dubious about the process, German officials are reluctant to give up power over their banks and do not want to pay the bills for other struggling euro nations.

Last week ECB President Mario Draghi announced the guidelines for the bank's assessment of the bloc's 124 largest banks. The assessments are set to be carried out before November 2014 when the ECB steps into its new role as bank supervisor. By conducting the assessment, which Draghi pledged will be quiet difficult to pass, eurozone policymakers are hoping to restore confidence to the eurozone's banking sector.

Moving forward the Wall Street Journalreported that markets will likely see swings and roundabouts as eurozone leaders attempt to agree how to handle the results of the assessment. The discussions to come will likely center around whether to use the assessments as a tool to change the industry's structure or not.

Top Promising Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Back in the golden age of big American concept cars, wonder machines that spoke to an era of almost unlimited dreams and prosperity, came one especially beautiful Lincoln.

The 1955 Indianapolis Exclusive Study showed what can happen when one of the better Italian design houses is set loose on one of the outlandishly huge chassis of the era. The result is a big car that combined American swagger with continental flair.

In this case, the body comes from Gian Carlo Boano, a promising young designer of the era, and the car itself is going on the block Thursday at the Art of the Automobile Event being held jointly by RM Auctions and Sotheby's in New York. The one-off Lincoln is valued at $2 million to $2.5 million.

The car made its big debut at the 37th Salone dell'Automobile in Turin in 1955. At the time, Lincoln, Ford's premium division, couldn't have been hotter, as the hit song Hot Rod Lincoln would later attest.

Joe Raedle/Getty Images NEW YORK -- Tyson Foods (TSN) has won a bidding war to gobble up Hillshire Brands (HSH), the maker of Jimmy Dean sausages and Ball Park hot dogs. Tyson had been vying with rival poultry producer Pilgrim's Pride for Hillshire, which wrapped up its bidding process Sunday. Tyson ended up raising its offer to $63 a share. It had previously offered $50 a share, after which Pilgrim's Pride (PPC) raised its bid to $55 a share. Pilgrim's Pride, which is owned by Brazilian meat giant JBS, said Monday that it is withdrawing its offer. Still, the deal isn't sealed yet. It is contingent on the termination of Hillshire's offer to acquire Pinnacle Foods (PF), which makes Birds Eye frozen vegetables and Wish-Bone salad dressings. Pinnacle could choose to cut bait and walk away with $163 million breakup fee, or force the deal to a vote by Hillshire shareholders. A Pinnacle representative didn't immediately return a call for comment. In a conference call with reporters, Tyson CEO Donnie Smith said he was confident the $63 offer would end up being worthwhile for Tyson shareholders, despite how high the price went. "Great brands like Jimmy Dean and Ball Park just don't become available very often," Smith said. Hillshire's stock closed at $36.95 on May 9, the day before the company announced the Pinnacle deal. Tyson, like Pilgrim's Pride, has been looking to boost its presence in brand-name, prepared foods like Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches. Those types of products are more profitable than fresh meat, such as chicken breasts, where there isn't as much wiggle room to pad prices. While Tyson and Pilgrim's Pride already sell some brand-name products, their businesses have been more focused on supplying supermarkets and restaurant chains. In particular, Tyson said it was drawn by Hillshire's stable of breakfast foods, which would better position it in the fast-growing category. Tyson also noted the potential for cost savings by combining suppl

Phosphorescent Organic Light Emitting Diode Technologies

Phosphorescent OLEDs utilize specialized materials and device structures that allow OLEDs to emit light through a process known as phosphorescence. Traditional fluorescent OLEDs emit light through an inherently less efficient process. Theory and experiment show that phosphorescent OLEDs exhibit device efficiencies up to four times higher than those exhibited by fluorescent OLEDs. Phosphorescence substantially reduces the power requirements of an OLED and is potentially useful in displays for hand-held devices, such as Smartphone, where battery power is often a limiting factor. Phosphorescence is also important for area displays such as televisions, where higher device efficiency and lower heat generation may enable longer ! product lifetimes and increased energy efficiency.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Nicholas Vardy]

Here's why I expect Micron Technology (MU) to move up even further in the weeks ahead.

First, Micron is in an enviable position in the otherwise boom-and-bust semiconductor sector.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU  ) , up 24%
Micron vaulted into the stratosphere in May on news that it won the bidding for the assets of bankrupt Japanese DRAM memory maker Elpida, paying $2.75 billion to beat out two other major bidding groups. With the purchase, Micron will suddenly be among the top players in the industry, trailing Samsung but coming in ahead of South Korea's Hynix. As consolidation in the industry continues, the prospects for bitter price wars to end and for margins to rise look brighter, and that could spell long-term profits for Micron once its deal is complete.
