This could eventually cut the number of North American Class Is in half, something that the regulators will take under very serious consideration before giving their blessings on the first merger. If a CP-CSX union occurs, Norfolk Southern (NSC) would be the next target, in our opinion, as Canadian National Railway (CNI), Union Pacific (UNP), and [Berkshire Hathaway's (BRKB)] BNSF could each contemplate forming their own transcontinental railway. CP's reported offer to merge with CSX could boost the latter's stock price on Monday, while CP shares may underperform the group.

DirecTV's largest shareholder, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB), seemed pleased by the deal.

"This is a terrific transaction for all involved: Enhanced choice for consumers coupled with increased value for both AT&T and DirecTV shareholders -- a natural," said Berkshire investment managers Todd Combs and Ted Weschler in a joint statement. Berkshire also disclosed last week that it just acquired a stake in Verizon as well.

Warren Buffett-led Berkshire Hathaway Inc.(BRKB) said first-quarter profit fell, driven by lower net income at two of its major businesses, a reinsurance unit and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad. FedEx Corp.(FDX) said it would raise its freight-delivery fuel surcharge for some deliveries and next year start charging for ground delivery based on package volume for all packages.

HP Slips as UBS Cuts Estimate

Hot Telecom Companies To Invest In 2016

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- HP (HPQ) shares slipped more than 1% on Thursday after UBS cut its earnings estimate and price target, just days after the embattled PC maker was dropped from the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Citing HP's underwhelming third-quarter results last month, UBS warned that the tech giant could give disappointing earnings guidance at its analyst meeting on Oct. 9.

"We expect that the disappointment of F3Q will impact the earnings guidance at the meeting, partially offset by a solid free cash flow expectation and an increased share repurchase program," wrote UBS analyst Steven Milunovich, in a note.

UBS reduced its fiscal 2014 earnings estimate for HP to $3.55 a share from $3.80 a share. It also cut the company's price target to $24 a share from $28 a share. HP shares dipped 1.26% to $21.99 during late morning trading on Thursday, easily outpacing the 0.2% and 0.1% declines on the Dow and the S&P 500, respectively. Led by CEO Meg Whitman, HP is in the throes of a massive restructuring effort, but continues to wrestle with the effects of a tough PC environment. HP's Personal Systems revenue was down 11% year over year during its third quarter. The company also announced changes to its leadership team last month, with Chief Operating Officer Bill Veghte becoming executive vice president and general manager of the company's Enterprise Group, and Dave Donatelli, who previously led the group, taking on a new role identifying early stage technologies. "After initial progress in its turnaround, HP is finding the going tougher as reflected in Meg Whitman backing off on the prospect of revenue growth in F14," wrote Milunovich. "Recent management changes will take time to have a positive impact." Lifted by positive sentiment toward HP's turnaround potential, the company's shares rallied significantly this year, but have slumped more than 14% since it reported its third-quarter results. HP, along with Alcoa (AA) and Bank of America (BAC), was recently dropped from the Dow, underlining the company's ongoing challenges. Like an oil tanker captain attempting to perform a U-turn, Whitman faces a Herculean task breathing new life into the one-time Silicon Valley icon. This task is made even more difficult by a harsh competitive landscape where HP's PC business remains under intense pressure from the likes of Apple's (AAPL) iPad. Tech research firm IDC earlier this week forecast that tablet shipments will surpass total PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2013, and annually by 2015. --Written by James Rogers in New York. Beer Man: Authentic Horny Devil matches Belgian…

Beer Man is a weekly profile of beers from across the country and around the world.

This week: Horny Devil

AleSmith Brewing Co., San Diego

http://alesmith.com

I ran into AleSmith's Horny Devil on the store shelves recently, the first time I'd seen the brewery's products in Wisconsin.

I hope they stick around because like Ommegang (New York), Goose Island (Chicago), Lakefront (Milwaukee) and many other American breweries, AleSmith shows a deep understanding of the Belgian style and can hold its head high against the native imports from Belgium.

Horny Devil is a strong Belgian blond ale and makes its quality known from the get-go with strong aromas of fruit, coriander and the unique smell of Belgian candi sugar. The head is white and fluffy, leaving thick, sticky lacing on the sides of the glass that gives off concentrated sugar and malt aromas of its own.

The spices and Belgian yeast characteristics come through nicely during sampling, with coriander and cloves melding with the light malt. There also is a complexity to the fruit flavors that come through — grape, lemon, orange and pears. The citrus aspect is countered by the candi sugar without the ale becoming too sweet.

Horny Devil, at 10% ABV, seems to differ from typical beers in the style by having a bit more oomph to the spices, without them becoming overpowering. It also downplays the alcohol aftertaste that is a common feature of Belgian ales, which is a change I agree with.

Lastly, like the best Belgian ales, Horny Devil has a bright carbonation at the same time it leaves a creamy mouthfeel.

Grand Cru is a darker version of Horny Devil and shares the same 10% ABV, at least according to the information on the bottles (AleSmith's website gives different ABVs for the beers — 11% for Horny Devil and 10.5% for Grand Cru). It shares many of the traits of Horny Devil, but with flavors of caramel malt and darker fruit such as plums and dates. It makes a fine follow-up to its brewery mate.

AleSmith's Beer Finder page is only working for California. I bought my 750ml bottles in central Wisconsin, and found information of it also being available in Arizona, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Washington.

Many beers are available only regionally. Check the brewer's website, which often contains information on product availability. Contact Todd Haefer at beerman@postcrescent.com. To read previous Beer Man columns Click here.

Top 10 Medical Stocks To Own Right Now

Top 10 Medical Stocks To Own Right Now: Mast Therapeutics Inc (MSTX)

Mast Therapeutics, Inc., formerly ADVENTRX Pharmaceuticals, Inc., incorporated in December 1995, is a development-stage company biopharmaceutical company focused on developing product candidates. The Company's product candidate is ANX-188, a rheologic, antithrombotic and cytoprotective agent that improves microvascular blood flow and has application in treating a range of diseases and conditions, such as complications arising from sickle cell disease. As of December 31, 2011, the Company also is developing ANX-514, a detergent-free formulation of the chemotherapy drug docetaxel. The Company offers ANX-188 (purified poloxamer 188), ANX-514 (docetaxel for injectable emulsion) and Exelbine (vinorelbine injectable emulsion). In April 2011, the Company acquired SynthRx, Inc. In February 2014, Mast Therapeutics Inc completed its acquisition of Aires Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Aires became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mast Therapeutics.

ANX-188 (purified poloxamer 188)

ANX-188 is an aqueous solution of a purified form of poloxamer 188. Poloxamer 188 (P1880, is a nonionic, block copolymer that has been found to improve microvascular blood flow by reducing viscosity, particularly under low shear conditions, and by reducing adhesive frictional forces. The Company's purified form of P188 (purified P188), which is the active ingredient in ANX-188, was designed to eliminate certain low molecular weight substances present in P188 (non-purified), which is primarily responsible for the moderate to moderately severe elevations in serum creatinine levels (acute renal dysfunction) observed in prior clinical studies of P188 (non-purified). Purified P188 has been evaluated in multiple clinical studies by a prior sponsor, including a 255-patient, phase III study.

ANX-514 (docetaxel for injectable emulsion)

AN! X-514 is a detergent-free emulsion formulation of docetaxel, an intravenously-injected chemotherapy drug c ommonly used to treat solid tumors. Taxotere, a branded form! ulation of docetaxel, is approved to treat breast, non-small cell lung, prostate, gastric, and head and neck cancers. ANX-514 was designed to have clinically comparable release of docetaxel relative to Taxotere while eliminating the presence of polysorbate 80 and ethanol, both of which are used to solubilize docetaxel in the Taxotere formulation. The ANX-514 formulation solubilizes docetaxel using oil droplets consists of a combination of non-toxic excipients. Docetaxel is contained within these oil droplets and can be administered intravenously without using detergents as pharmaceutical vehicles. Once in central circulation, the emulsion is metabolized rapidly, leaving chemically-identical active ingredient to exert its cytotoxic effect. ANX-514 may reduce the incidence and severity of hypersensitivity reactions and delay the onset of fluid retention.

Exelbine (vinorelbine injectable emulsion)

Exelbine is an emulsion formulation of the chemother apy drug vinorelbine. Navelbine, a branded formulation of vinorelbine, is approved in the United States to treat advanced non-small cell lung cancer as a single agent or in combination with cisplatin, and approved in the European Union to treat non-small cell lung cancer and advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

In August 2011, the Company received a complete response letter from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stating that it could not approve the Exelbine Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in its present form and that the bioequivalence study would need to be repeated because the authenticity of the drug products used in the bioequivalence trial could not be verified in accordance with FDA standards. However, the Company elected to discontinue independent development of Exelbine and as of December 31, 2011, the Company was seeking a partner or o! utside in! vestor for the program to complete the necessary bioequivalence study.

The Company compete s with GlaxoSmithKline, Provenge and Pfizer.

Advisors' Opinion:

Mast Therapeutics (MSTX), a biopharmaceutical company, focuses on developing therapies for serious or life-threatening diseases. This stock closed up 2.1% 65 cents per share in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $0.63-$0.67

    52-Week Range: $0.40-$1.10

    Thursday's Volume: 1.11 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 1.88 million

From a technical perspective, MSTX spiked modestly higher here right above its 50-day moving average of 61 cents per share with decent upside volume. This stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last month, with shares moving between 60 cents on the downside and 72 cents on the upside. Shares of MSTX are now starting to push higher and into range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if MSTX manages to clear some near-term overhead resistance levels at 68 to 72 cents per share with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MSTX as long as it's trending above some key near-term support at 60 cents per share and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 1.88 million shares. If that breakout materializes soon, then MSTX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at 80 to 85 cents per share, or even 93 cents per share.

Top Integrated Utility Stocks To Own For 2015

We've seen quite a long, and somewhat, complex bull market over the past few years, writes Tom Bradley, of The Globe and Mail, who analyzes it through a three-pronged approach.

A long stock market run goes through many phases. There's a healthy debate going on right now as to where this one is atoes it have further to go, or is it over? In assessing where we are, it's useful to look back at how things unfolded over the last four and a half years, and understand why markets have gone up so much.

I'm going to look at it through three lensesundamentals (the outlook for profits and dividends); valuation (what we're paying for those profits and dividends) and investor sentiment (how bullish or bearish investors are).

When this bull market started on March 9, 2009, the fundamentals didn't look very good. The banks were teetering, a recession was imminent, and the outlook for earnings was poor, to say the least.

In hindsight, it was as good a starting point for a bull market as you'll ever see. The necessary requirements were all there poor short-term outlook, rock-bottom price to earnings multiples (P/Es), forced selling from margin accounts and liquidity-strained pensions funds, and a feeling that we'll never make a decent return in the stock market again.

Linda Davidson/The Washington Post via Getty ImagesShoppers at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Oxon Hill, Md. There are few forms of shopping I enjoy more than outlet shopping. There is something about all of those discount stores packed so closely together that makes me super excited! But I am not going to tell you that all outlet stores are a good deal, because some of them are not. Also, brands sometimes create cheaper items to sell specifically in their outlet locations, and those are not always a smart buy. But for the most part, outlet malls are still an excellent way to save some money while picking up items for the entire family. Here are five ways to make the most of your trip to an outlet: 1. Figure out the outlet 'brand.' There are a couple of management companies that own quite a few outlet malls in the United States, including Premium Outlets (SPG) and Tanger Factory Outlet Centers (SKT). Before heading out, be sure to check the website for the entire outlet mall for any possible deals or coupons. Premium and Tanger Outlets also have Facebook (FB) pages where they will occasionally post coupons that you can print from home. 2. Look for an outlet discount card or VIP program. Many outlet malls have VIP savings programs that can save you big bucks throughout the year and also give you special access to new promotions and sales. The Fashion Outlets of Chicago opened last year and offer a Green Savings Card that costs $5 for a yearly membership. Those with a Green Savings Card receive extra discounts at a huge number of stores and restaurants in the mall, which is on top of the already low prices. 3. 'Like' the outlet store on Facebook. If there is an outlet store that you frequent, go ahead and like its Facebook page so that you will be one of the first to know about sales and promotions. The Kate Spade Outlet (KATE) will frequently post promotions to Facebook before emailing subscribers. The J. Crew Factory Store has offered special promotions th

    Bursting with paw-tential
No stock goes straight up, but between 2009 and 2014 it was a steep uphill ride for stakeholders in animal health products companyMWI Veterinary Supply (NASDAQ: MWIV  ) , who saw their shares rise in value by more than 700%. But all good things must end, and shares of the company have dipped by more than 20% from their all-time high set earlier this year.

  • [By Rupert Hargreaves]

Pet-related companies are highly sought after
Having said that, it would appear that in comparison to the rest of the pet-related sector, Zoetis is fairly valued. Peer MWI Veterinary Supply (NASDAQ: MWIV  ) trades at 27 times forward earnings, and again the company is highly defensive, engaging in the distribution of animal health products to veterinarians in the United States and the United Kingdom. Veterinary supply is exposed to the same demand factors as Zoetis -- greater demand for animal treatments will lead to more demand for the distribution of animal health products.

May Fund Flows: ‘Prelude to the Storm,’ Says Morningstar

Morningstar said Tuesday that May was another strong month of mutual fund inflows: Investors added $38.6 billion into long-term funds, excluding figures for money-market and fund of funds, as well as ETFs.

Taxable-bond funds stayed ahead of the pack with $21 billion in flows.

Investors, who embraced core, intermediate-term bond funds in 2012, are increasingly turning to less interest-rate-sensitive bond sectors and are shunning government bond sectors, according to Michael Rawson, CFA.

In May, interest rates spiked, with the 10-year Treasury rate increasing by nearly half a percent to 2.16%. At the same time, the Barclays Aggregate Bond Index fell 1.78%.

Investors took profits in U.S. equity funds in May “but continued their love affair with emerging-markets stocks,” says Rawson.

Municipal-bond funds experienced net outflows for the third month in a row. Meanwhile, money-market funds (also tracked by Morningstar) grew by $27 billion—their first monthly inflow of 2013.

Darkening Skies

In May, the improving economy and jobs report led to the conclusion that the Fed may ease up on quantitative-easing measures. Flows into the intermediate-term bond category weakened but were positive for the month—and did not turn negative until early June.

In May, it was nontraditional-bond and bank-loan funds that took in the largest share of flows, according to Morningstar.

The PIMCO Total Return Bond had strong outflows. But PIMCO Unconstrained, the largest fund in the nontraditional category, gained more than $1 billion in flows, as did JP Morgan Strategic Income Opportunities.

The bank-loan category also attracted strong inflows, led by Oppenheimer Senior Floating Rate with a $700 million haul. (The fund rose 0.24% in May and 3.54% during the first five months of 2013.

Equity Tremors

The rise in rates did not sit well with equity investors in May.

“While the S&P 500 was up 2.34% for the month, yield-oriented sectors such as REITs and utilities each lost more than 6%, according to Morningstar sector indexes,” Rawson said.

U.S. equity fund investors took out a net $700 million in May, including withdrawals of $1.9 billion from large-growth funds.

On the other hand, international-equity funds gained $8.5 billion, with diversified emerging-markets funds leading the way.

A new fund, ING Emerging Markets Index, “burst onto the scene” with $470 million of inflows in May, says Morningstar. Meanwhile the Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock Index brought in $363 million.

Top 10 Net Payout Yield Companies To Invest In Right Now

International funds that each brought in more than $1 billion included the Silver-rated GMO International Intrinsic Value and Gold-rated Oakmark International.

(Oakmark International has gained 45% in the past 12 months compared with 28% for the MSCI EAFE Index.)

Fund Family Winners

Vanguard led the pack again, with more than $11 billion in flows.

In May, the fund giant officially launched two international bond funds: the Vanguard Total International Bond Index Fund and Vanguard Emerging Markets Government Bond Index Fund, which didn’t officially start trading until June 4. PIMCO stayed in second place, though its $2.5 billion of flows was its weakest showing for the year to date, Morningstar reports.

Franklin Templeton was close behind PIMCO, adding more than $2 billion; its Templeton Global Bond Fund led the way. Fidelity came in fourth, thanks to strong flows into the Fidelity Series Investment Grade Bond and Strategic Advisers Core Income.

“For the second month in a row, flows to MFS were lifted by a strong interest in Bronze-rated MFS Massachusetts Investors Trust,” said Rawson.

Hartford, Janus and Columbia, however, each had strong outflows.

The Silver-rated Hartford Capital Appreciation saw redemptions of $1.4 billion, while Neutral-rated Janus Fund saw outflows of $481 million.

Top 5 Food Stocks To Buy Right Now

www.tacobell.com The munchers have spoken, and Taco Bell isn't going to like what it's hearing. A recent Consumer Reports poll asked its readers to chime in with their opinions on the quality of signature items at leading fast food restaurants. It got an earful as more than 32,000 offered up their thoughts on more than 96,000 meals across 65 chains. The most magnetic headline of the report was that McDonald's (MCD) burgers ranked dead last among the 21 largest burger flippers in the country. However, Yum! Brands (YUM) -- the parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell -- got a double dose of bad news when KFC ranked eighth and worst on the list for chicken, and Taco Bell stumbled into a last-place eighth out of eight competitors in the burrito category. The Fine Cuisine-Cost Conundrum It's not necessarily ironic that the country's largest burger, fried chicken and Mexican chains ranked last in the Consumer Reports taste test. It makes sense. These chains tend to offer cheaper fare than their rivals, and part of that is a byproduct of lower spending on ingredients. Despite the advantages of buying in massive bulk, one should never expect the raw materials that go into a $1.49 Beefy 5-Layer Burrito at Taco Bell to be in the same category as those that go into a $6 burrito at Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). There's also something to be said about the old adage that familiarity breeds contempt. The well-known top dogs will always be the easiest targets. However, Taco Bell still needs to be careful. It used to be a compliment to be mentioned in the same breath as McDonald's, but these days, it's disparaging. People Still Want Their Gorditas Taco Bell can point to recent performance to prove that it's not being shunned by diners (relatively speaking) in the same way that McDonald's is. Outside of an unusual dip in its most recent quarter, Taco Bell has mustered positive comparable store sales pretty consistently in this country over the past couple of years. That hasn't been the case for McDonald's, which is coming off of three consecutive quarters of negative comps in the U.S. Taco Bell should be able to turn things around for the quarter that ended in June. We'll find out how it held up later this month when Yum! Brands offers up fresh financials, but the late March arrival of the Waffle Taco and June's addition of the Quesarito likely resulted in a healthy uptick in traffic.

BlueOrange Studio/Shutterstock One day out of 365, we pay homage to our sainted mothers. Those of us who are members of this long-suffering, uncomplaining, self-sacrificing class may get some soggy French toast in bed, (don't worry, kids; mom will clean up the kitchen), a chance to read in peace, or perhaps time to indulge in a long, hot bath. Bringing Home the Bacon If you really want to pay back mom for all she's done, get ready to pony up big. A card and some carnations (the official flower of Mother's Day, who knew?) just won't cut it. The cost of replacing mom as nurturer, nurse, cleaner and cook -- according to Insure.com's 2014 Mother's Day salary index -- would run you $62,985 a year, up from $59,862 in 2013. Breaking down the price of having someone else handle her various duties: Cooking and cleaning, $12,230 Child care, $21,736 Homework help, $7,290 Chauffeur, $5,672 Shopping, yard work, party and activity planning, finances, etc., $15,019 And my personal favorite, finding out what the kids are up to (paid in the equivalent value of a private detective), $1,036. Salary.com placed a higher value on moms in its 2014 Mother's Day salary survey, concluding that stay-at-home moms were worth $118,905 and working moms worth $70,107 (this does not include any paid salary from their job), with both groups putting more than 56 hours of overtime at home. These numbers are all up from last year's survey. Cooking It Up in a Pan Mom helps to pay for other things, too. Thanks to the Department of Agriculture, you can see what it costs to raise a child in the U.S. to 18. As of August 2013, the average cost is $241,080. This does not cover college, and hopefully dear old dad is contributing. In 2012, there were 10.3 million single U.S. mothers with children under 18, and one-third of women who gave birth in 2012 were single moms. By becoming moms, women give up time to do other things, what economists call an "opportunity cost." Particularly if your mother st

sixflags.com Plenty of stocks go up and down in any given week. The gainers inspire us to keep investing. The decliners keep greed in check while reminding us about the risks of the equity markets. Let's go over some of last week's best and worst performers. Regulus Therapeutics (RGLS) -- Up 161 percent last week Last week's biggest winner was a biotech upstart that got welcome news on a potential hepatitis C treatment. Regulus Therapeutics is showing that patients receiving a single injection of its drug are reporting lower viral loads a month later. There are still plenty of regulatory hurdles to clear, but it's certainly encouraging. Select Comfort (SCSS) -- Up 21 percent last week Shares of Select Comfort moved higher after it announced blowout quarterly results. The company behind the Sleep Number air-chambered mattresses saw net sales and earnings per share climb 23 percent and 22 percent, respectively. Select Comfort's strong performance was fueled by an impressive 16 percent spike in comparable-store sales. The favorable momentum is going to linger: Select Comfort is boosting its guidance for the entire year. Six Flags (SIX) -- Up 16 percent last week It was a summer of thrills at Six Flags. Shares of the regional amusement park operator rose like a coaster on a chain lift after it announced better-than-expected revenue growth. The report was encouraging enough for Six Flags to boost its dividend. The stock is now yielding a hearty 5.3 percent. Boulder Brands (BDBD) -- Down 31 percent last week Shares of Boulder Brands lost nearly a third of their value after the food company behind Smart Balance buttery spreads and EVOL frozen entrees warned of a soft holiday quarter. Sweetener Products

The Company's sweetener products represented approximately 44% of the Company's net sales for the year ended December 31, 2012. Glucose syrups are fundamental ingredients used in food products, such as baked goods, snack foods, beverages, canned fruits, condiments, candy and other sweets, dairy products, ice cream, jams and jellies, prepared mixes and table syrups. Glucose syrups offer functionality in addition to sweetness to processed foods. High Maltose Syrup is special type of glucose syrup, which is primarily used as a fermentable sugar in brewing beers. High maltose syrups are also used in the production of confections, canning and some other food processing applications. The Company's high maltose syrups actually speeds the fermentation process, allowing brewers to increase capacity without adding capital.

High fructose corn syrup is used in a variety of consumer products, including soft drinks, fruit-flavored beverages, baked goods, dairy products, confections and other food and beverage products. In addition to sweetness and ease of use, high fructose corn syrup provides body, humectancy and aids in browning, freezing point and crystalliza! tion control.

In addition to sweetness, polyols inhibit crystallization; provide binding, humectancy and plasticity; add texture; extend shelf life; prevent moisture migration, and are an excipient suitable for tableting.

Maltodextrins and Glucose Syrup Solids products have a multitude of food applications, including formulations where liquid syrups cannot be used. Maltodextrins are resistant to browning, provide solubility, have a low hydroscopicity (do not retain moisture), and are ideal for their carrier/bulking properties. Glucose syrup solids have a bland flavor, remain clear in solution are easy to handle and provide bulking properties.

Starch Products

Phoenix resident Patti Craze started soul-searching when her interior design and home-staging business slowed in 2010. So, on her 46th birthday that year, she took up a long-forgotten childhood pastime: ice-skating. Timidly lacing up for the first time in years, she once again became that tiny third-grader going round and round on a rink in her Seattle neighborhood.

Siemens provides a range of valuable technology products and services to a number of industries around the world. The company reported earnings that showed losses, although they were less then expected. The stock has struggled in recent years but is now trading near highs for the year. Over the last four quarters, earnings have been decreasing while revenues are mixed, which has produced conflicting feelings among investors in the company. Relative to its peers and sector, Siemens has been a weak year-to-date performer. WAIT AND SEE what Siemens does this quarter.
